"Something is rotten in the [United] Kingdom (...)"

"Police forces across the UK have lost track of the whereabouts of 322 convicted sex offenders, a newspaper has reported."
This is one of the many headlines we could read last week in British newspapers. We all know the reputation of British press and many would also know that the paper that carried out this investigation is far from being one of the most reliable.
Anyhow, I think it is worth to remember that the Portuguese system is not the only to face hardship, not that it is too comforting...
I quote from the BBC news website:
"[Sex offenders] are required to inform police and probation officers of their addresses. Released sex offenders are supposed to be monitored by officials working under Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA).
But according to the News of the World, registered sex offenders - including rapists and paedophiles - have used a loophole in the system allowing them to register vague addresses in order to disappear.
Last year, one paedophile who breached register conditions was allowed to give his address as "woods" after moving from 'a tent near Guildford leisure centre', the paper claimed.
"In the UK we have one of the most advanced systems in the world for monitoring and managing dangerous offenders." (John Reid, Home Secretary)

The minister was also criticised for writing to judges asking them to jail only the most dangerous and persistent offenders, to ease prison overcrowding, but Mr. John Reid said he was merely re-stating existing guidelines.

A judge has said he had to bail a paedophile rather than remand him in custody because of overcrowded jails.

[The paedophile] admitted three offences of causing a person under 16 to engage in sexual activity without consent, and one of sexual activity with a child under 16.
He was arrested after complaints were made about his sex activities with a teenage boy at a house in Torquay.
He has previous convictions for sex offences against young boys and admitted to police that he had "a problem with children", and was "attracted to young boys".
I don't know about you, but I found this outrageous! As well as that, the fact that judges wear these silly wigs. What kind of authority does it confer to them!??!

Apparently, army bases and ships are to be used to "solve" the problem of overcrowded prisons.
